The Peshwas presided over Pune from 1729 to 1818, a period of over 90 years. During their reign, they made indelible changes to the city of Pune and left their stamp on it. They were great patrons of art and architecture, and during their reign, numerous temples and mansions came up in the city, directly or indirectly patronized by them.
But there are some questions that remain unanswered. How many temples were built in Pune during the Peshwai? Who were they dedicated to? How many of these survive? A list of temples from 1811 answers this question.
This list was compiled in the last years of the Peshwai, making it very important since it presents a clear picture of the religious complex of Pune during the Peshwai. No major and very few minor temples were built after this list was compiled. The gods in this list are diverse and a balanced mix of Puranic and Folk deities. It also presents a very clear picture as to who the most popular deities of the day were, with Hanuman topping the list and Vithoba and Ganapati following him in close pursuit with each other. As you reach the end, you'll see some very interesting deities such as Babdeo, Samba, and Surya. How many of these temples have you seen?
@Kiran Kalamdani Sir, I'm working on it, will share in a few days:)
I wish these were identified on a map. It would represent a great heritage resource.
